Associate Conductor wanted for the Minnesota State Band
The Minnesota State Band announces its search for a new Associate Conductor. It is anticipated that the person selected will move into the role of Principal Conductor within a short period of time. The Minnesota State Band is an established group of 55 adult volunteers. Formed in 1898, the Band is the only remaining state band in the country and is the “Official Band of the State of Minnesota.” The Band has an active concert schedule performing 12 to 15 concerts every year.
The Associate Conductor position shall consist of the following duties:
- Assist the Conductor in defining the musical character of the Band, direct rehearsals and
concerts as identified by the Conductor and select and obtain music to be performed or rehearsed
by the Band for those concerts.
- Act as Conductor in the absence of the Conductor and for the rehearsals leading to concerts
being directed by the Associate Conductor.
- Serve as a voting member of the Board of Directors.
Candidates with a Bachelor of Music degree in performance, conducting, or education, and seasoned in classic concert band repertoire will be given a priority. Desired experience includes directing a community band, supervising volunteers, and teaching music to musicians playing at a very high level of ability.
The Associate Conductor is a part-time position with no benefits but does include a small yearly stipend. The position is available immediately. The selection committee consists of members of the Board of Directors and the Conductor. Selected finalists will be invited to audition during a regularly scheduled rehearsal. The selection committee will make a recommendation which will be voted upon by the full band membership.
